I believe that when we create, no matter what it is—a meal, a song, a garden, an altar space, a drawing, a knitted scarf, a haiku—we align with, and amplify, the creative life/love energy of our planet. Especially when our creation also feeds our wonder, imagination, gratitude, sense of belonging, humor or playfulness.

Creation is our basic nature. At a time when we are seduced or frightened by other, darker aspects of our nature, I believe our joyful creations are vital rebellion, no matter how imperfect, or even silly, our creations might be. Here’s a recent one of mine.

One for the Money, Two for the Show…

One for the road,
One at a time,
One after another,
In a one-horse town,
Bet you can’t eat just one!
One for all and all for one:
No one, someone, anyone, everyone,
We are all One!

That makes two of us,
Two peas in a pod,
Two’s company!
Put two and two together.
No two ways about it!
I know a trick or two;
Give me two seconds,
Just two shakes of a lamb’s tail;
Here’s my two cents’ worth:
Stand on your own two feet,
Don’t be a goody-two-shoes,
You needn’t be of two minds or stumble on two left feet,
Don’t be a two-faced two-timer,
Or even the lesser of two evils;
Give two hoots about something!

I’ll give you three wishes, three guesses, three cheers, three strikes,
Three coins in the fountain,
Can you make three in a row?
The Three Fates have determined that things come in threes (sneezes, good fortune, death…),
Three-legged stools, three-cornered hats, three-toed sloths,
Three blind mice, three little pigs, three musketeers,
Three alarm fires,
(at least in 3D).
Don’t make me give you the third degree!

Be foursquare,
Grounded in four corners, four directions, four elements,
Faithful friend to the four-leggeds,
(and four-and-twenty blackbirds),
On all fours if you must—
Not scattered to the four winds,
Uttering four letter words.
But out with your family of four
Gathering four-leaf clovers.
